Noted rumour that M11 Link may be opened on 11 July. Possible bike ride in that area was discussed with a view to investigating the cycle-ability of the link.
Dave, who works on the Downs, was interested in arranging a Dr Bike for 10th July. Doug agreed to do with Dave. Charlie to check if LCC has a Dr Bike placard/banner, Douglas to get if available.
Doug recounted meeting on ITP, which sets local government budget allocation from DETR for transport development. He was impressed by speaker Meyer Hillman who noted that the total allocation for cycling network development, £40m, is a few yards worth of the Jubilee Line: Hillman had argued for investment in low tech (cycling) as more cost effective than major public transport projects. Doug moved that LCC should press for more money for local cycling infrastucture. In Hackney we have a survey of members’ opinions on works needed at hazardous or impermeable points of the road system. Agreed to try to cost this shopping list and suggest to Borough Coordinators that similar exercises in other boroughs would be a useful campaign tool.
Went very well. Could have done more leafletting in nearby streets to attract passing cyclists, &/or leaflets & posters on preceding days. Posters were gorgeous but too small. How about countdown notices: 5/4/3/2/1 days to the Cyclists Breakfast? How about moving it 200 yards or so west to Northchurch Terrace intersection?
Biking the bounds
Both ride & BBQ great success. Felt Equal Play was too vulnerable to damage by barbeque to be completely comfortable. How about riverside garden of Kings Head pub just north of Lea Bridge?
Stokie Festival Bike Park
OK but marginal. Need to get properly integrated into festival organisers’ scenario next year. Write to them in November.
Downs Pub is cycle friendly (site of first cycle touring club, The Pickwick Club; cycles can be taken in & parked at the back; landlord had a go on the BikeE) but too noisy. The search for other venues continues: Tim to do.
